Listed below are some websites I have designed and built. All my sites use divs and CSS for layout (the 'box model'). I have also built some sites using the open source Joomla! content management system. For dynamic elements, I usually use PHP/MySQL (unless the client has a reasaon for using old-style ASP or newer ASP.Net). I also make use of open source components such as reCAPTCHA.

In addition, I have also worked on internal web-based applications (see below) for a number of clients. As these are internal systems, they are not publicly accessible. These include a JSP web application with a SQL Server back-end and an ASP.NET web application with a SQL Server back-end. For both, I designed a moderately complex relational database and built the front-end to allow the data to be updated (through data entry forms) and to provide reports to end-users.

www.aratkilocccd.org - Arat Kilo Child Care & Community Development, an NGO based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I built this site in Joomla and gave staff training so they can keep the site up to date.

www.completeboilerservices.co.uk - Use of relevant keywords in the appropriate parts of the site, along with URL submission to some of the main search engines and directories resulted in this site appearing in the first page of search results on major search engines for various search term combinations after about one month (without resorting to pay-per-click).

www.cpmsethiopia.com - I updated this site to clean up the code, the content and the overall appearance.

www.ethiopiansforethiopiansaddis.org - an NGO based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

www.higher.edu.et - built using Joomla (this site is sometimes down due to internet hosting problems in Ethiopia).

www.meseretcarefund.org - an NGO set up by some friends of mine; they are helping families in the Entoto area of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, who are living with HIV/Aids.

www.mumsformums.com - Mums for Mums is a small, local NGO based in Mekelle, in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, they are working hard to combat HIV/Aids and to help the marginalised of their society at community level. The enquiry form is in ASP with an Access database and includes an ASP ReCAPTCHA to help prevent junk mail.

www.northsouthconsulting.nl - consultancy company providing services to business people seeking to invest and set up in Ethiopia. The Direct Services page includes JavaScript in the right side menu to create rollover effects on the menu items, to change the colour of the relevant divs in the main area of the page.

www.redstore.ie - website commissioned by the owner of The Red Store bar & restaurant in Youghal, Co. Cork.

www.sosaddis.org.et - an Addis Ababa-based NGO, SOS Addis, who are focussing on environmental issues in Ethiopia, specifically plastic waste and air pollution. I re-designed their website for them.

www.talentyouthassociation.org - a youth NGO in Addis Ababa, this site was built in Joomla so they can keep it up to date themselves (I also gave them some training in how to work with their content in Joomla).

joomla.xlabmentoring.com - the brief here was to take an existing site and port it into Joomla, using the existing graphics and keeping the general look & feel. Hence I had to customise a Joomla template (both code and background graphics) as well as creating the site structure using Joomla articles.

www.yigotours.com - a small Ethiopian tour company. Site includes a Flickr badge to show a random selection of photos. There is a custom-built (using PHP/MySQL) admin area that allows the owner to manage news items and guestbook/testimonial entries. The contact and testimonial forms use the PHP-based ReCAPTCHA to prevent spam.

Web-based Applications

I have also built internal web-based systems for client organizations. Two in particular are:

For an Irish head-quartered multi-national, I developed from start to finish a system used by account managers to track customer projects, recording project and invoicing information. This is integrated with the SalesForce.com enterprise sales application and was built using JSP web pages with Java back-end classes and a SQL Server 2000 database. I worked with the client to flesh out the system requirements, from which I developed the system in an iterative process, continually working with the client to ensure their needs were being met.
For a high profile homeless agency in Ireland, I developed a management information system that is used to record key performance data for monitoring and evaluation purposes. The system was built on a Microsoft platform, using ASP.NET 2.0 with a SQL Server 2005 database. The system has allowed the organization to provide management reports that were not previously possible and also has built-in tracking and reports that allow managers to monitor their team leaders' entry of key performance indicators.
