Web Development

As a freelance web developer, I work on small to medium-scale web sites, designing and building the site as well as working with the customer to help them produce relevant content that will help bring visitors to the site. If you need a brochure website with a simple enquiry form or something more dynamic with user input and interaction, I can do it for you at a competitive price.

I also have extensive experience in database design, having designed back-end databases for a number of web-based applications. I know from personal experience the importance of a well-designed database in the performance and robustness of web-based applications. I have worked with databases in Access, SQL Server and MySQL, using ASP, PHP and JSP to generate dynamic web pages that interact with them.

...Want to make your site standards-compliant

There's alot of talk out there about accessibility and compliant web sites. I have been working on web sites for about 10 years now, covering all aspects from backend databases to styles and layout. Over the last couple of years, I have spent a lot of time informing myself about web standards and, of course, using them - I now do as much of my web development as possible using CSS and div-based layouts rather than tables (because this is more compliant with W3C standards and also helps to make sites more accessible, not to mention easier to maintain from the designer's point of view). I also believe that the web should be accessible to everyone...to that end, I try to always include at least the fundamental accessiblity features such as access keys for links and title text for links. If you want to update your existing site to make it meet the latest W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards or if you want your new site to use up to date XHTML and CSS, contact me for an initial discussion.

...Wonder just what is SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It means optimising your site for search engines - simple things like putting the right keywords and search terms in the right places are a start to this process. Your site also needs to be submitted to the search engine web crawlers and directories. This in itself is not a guarantee of success and there are companies who promise lots but do it through dodgy and unethical means such as gateway sites. SEO is fast becoming a branch of internet skills that overlaps with marketing. To get some idea of what's involved, have a look at this article by Tim Ireland. The site www.searchenginewatch.com also has lots of information. I can help you to think about your site in terms of SEO and how to make it work for you.
