Addis has a good range of restaurants, both traditional and western style.
| Restaurant | Location | Info |
|---|---|---|
| Addis Carnivore | Haile GebreSelassie Road, near NOC petrol station/Ayssinia Supermarket | Serves good range of western-style food, main course price about ETB40-80 includes soup and salad from the salad bar |
| Aladdins | Just off Bole Rd, near the Japanese Embassy's residence | Meditteranean/Arabic dishes such as hummus, tabouleh, kebabs. Very good food and a nice atmosphere. Best to order a selection of dishes to share. On some nights of the week there's an obligatory per-table charge for the live music from Jimmy the keyboard player! Good wine list also. |
| Buffet de La Gare | Beside the train station, known as La Gare (or 'Lagaher'), which is not far from the stadium in Addis. | Good selection of western dishes, also some Ethiopian dishes. Pastas are good (about B25/30). Live music on Saturday nights. |
| Castellis | In the Piassa area, on Mahatma Ghandi St. (there's also an Ethiopian Airlines sign over the door) | One of the well-established restaurants in Addis, serves genuine Italian food, probably the best available here, but it is relatively expensive. Reservations usually necessary. Phone 011-1571757. |
| Effoi | Mikey Leland Rd, beside Yoly Building (2 story black & red building) - the name is written in Amharic, not English. | Does only pizza but it's very good pizza, one of the best in Addis (according to Terri anyway)! They also have a small bar upstairs, with subdued lighting and nice decor. Go here if you want just pizza & beer! Pizzas range from B28 to about B45. |
| First Cup Cafe | First floor in Edna Mall (Matti Multiplex) building. | Nice cafe/restaurant - the noodle dishes are good, also very good cakes to have with your coffee. |
| German Beer Garden Inn | Down the unsurfaced road beside Edna Mall (Matti Multiplex) and into the left. | Some German food and other European dishes, along with beer brewed on the premises to a German recipe! |
| Juventus Club | Behind Meskal Square | Italian club (as you might guess), good Italian food. Good for lunch or dinner. |
| Lime Tree | 2nd floor, same building as Boston Day Spa, beside GTZ office & Alem Cinema on Bole Rd (near Friendship building) | Good for lunch & cofee - good sandwiches and range of hot food; the Indian food served on Tuesdays & Thursdays is very good. Possibly the best chocolate cake in Addis! Mains about ETB30-40. |
| Makush | Mega Building on Bole Rd (Ernst & Young sign on top of the building) | Pizza, pasta & other European dishes. Nice place that is also an art gallery, you can buy the art (they take Visa credit card) and also other artefacts like traditional wooden chairs. |
| Serenade | A little out of the way, near Amist Kilo. Follow the signs from the main road, turning left at St. Mary's Church if coming up from Arat Kilo. | Very good food in a cosy, intimate atmosphere (set in a house). Relatively expensive, mains around ETB70-120, but well worth it. The dessert trolley is a highlight - save some room! |
| Top View | As the name suggests, it's up on a hill with good views over Addis. Asmara Rd - up the hill from Megenagna round-about. | Pasta & other European dishes, also traditional food. Relatively pricey but the views are good. |
| Zebra Grill | Original branch is on the road leading from Haya Hulet down to Medhane Alem Church/Edna Mall. Newer branch on 9th floor of the building behind the Shell station on Bole Road, near Dembel Centre. | Known for chicken wings, also does burgers, chicken dishes such as Jamaican chicken and good fish dishes. Pitchers of beer are good value. |
